Amazing Wildflowers
As part of Community Day we have decided to support our local bees and butterflies by providing wildflower seeds to the wildlife lovers in our community. Almost nothing is as easy to plant as a wildflower, and if you pick a sunny location expect them to come back every year!
The paper envelopes contain an assortment of wildflowers (Lavendar Hyssop, Ironweed, Ox eye sunflower, and Lanceleaf Corepsis). Links to the actual seed vendor where these were purchased from available at the bottom of each image.
The amazing blooms are also as beneficial as they are beautiful – both by providing habitat for wildlife and creating food for our pollinators. Wildflowers tend to improve soil health, increase biodiversity, and can even give you a reason to spend less time mowing grass. Wildflower gardens promote sustainability.
Planting tips:
Planting time: September to December are the best months to plant wildflowers, but seeds can also be planted in May as long as the seeds beds are kept moist for about 4 weeks. Don't wait until June or July to plant the seeds, or the flowers will not mature enough to reseed their location next year.
Site Selection: Pick a sunny area that has atleast grass or weeds growing in it.
Planting (easy method): You can just toss the seeds onto the ground. If planting in May, remember to water the seeds every other day for a few weeks to keep soil most
Planting (intentional method): If you really want to ensure their success, prepare the planting site by loosening the top inch of soil with garden tools such as a metal rake or hoe. Alternatively you can spread a layer of topsoil approximately 1 inch thick. Spread the wildflower seeds and water them in - the water will carry the seeds to the correct planting depth (approximately 1/4" to 1/2" deep)
